Erectile dysfunction does not just happen overnight. It can occur from successive events or disruptions internally in the body. Among the events that lead to erectile dysfunction or impotency in men include
nerve impulses within the central nervous system, surrounding area in the penis, or a bodily response in muscles, tissues, veins, arteries, and in the corpora cavernosa.
However, some major reasons for the occurrence of erectile dysfunction in men can be traced on unhealthy lifestyle and diseases occurring in older adults.
Unhealthy Lifestyle
One of the major causes of erectile dysfunction is the kind of lifestyle a person has. Unhealthy living conditions and practices may adversely contribute to heart problems and erectile dysfunction. Detrimental habits that include smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise can affect the potency of males. In addition, surgeries such as cancer in the bladder and prostate operations may also affect the nerves and blood vessel surrounding the penis. Some medicines and drugs administered for high blood pressure, antihistamine, antidepressants, tranquilizers, etc. can contribute to increased erectile dysfunction.
Arteriosclerosis
Another cause of erectile dysfunction that older men should be aware of is arteriosclerosis. This condition occurs due to the hardening and dilation of arteries that can cause great reduction of the flow of blood in the body, thus leading to impotence. This disease is common in men aged 60 years old or so.
Diabetes Mellitus
If you have diabetes, erectile dysfunction is one of the symptoms that you may suffer from. Diabetes milletus is associated with high blood sugar levels that often affects the blood vessels and nerves in the body. In fact, 35% to 50% percent of diabetes male patients suffer from erectile dysfunction.
High Blood Pressure
Also, high blood can be one of the culprits for erectile dysfunction. Drugs for hypertension, heart disease, antidepressants, sedatives, tranquilizers, and many others can add up to the gravity of impotence.
Hormonal Dysfunction
Abnormalities in the hormone level of men can also account for less than 5% of impotent males. One of the causes is the deficiency in testosterone, which can result to an evident drop in libido or sexual urge and eventually erection dysfunction. Hormonal imbalance can also be associated with kidney and liver problems.
Other Psychological Causes
Not only are some external factors accountable for erectile dysfunction, some psychological factors should also be looked into. These factors are responsible for 10% to 20% of impotency causes in men.
ED may stem from childhood trauma or other factors including:
- Stress from external factors
- Anxiety or fear of sexual impotence
- Guilt towards the inability to sustain sexual strength during erection
- Depression caused by the anxiety to please the partner
These are just among the things that will help you understand how erectile dysfunction can affect your body and can also help a person figure out what needs to be done and address the factors that contribute to the condition. There are lots of ways to treat ED, and the first step is to figure and acknowledge the causes.
